Windows 11 - Can't Delete or Rename Files? Here's How to Fix It

Windows 11 is the gift that keeps on giving! Okay, I'll try to be more neutral.

If you're trying to delete or rename a file in your File Explorer and it simply won't let you, you're pressing the right buttons but nothing is happening, there's an easy, although inconvenient, way to fix it.

Why won't Windows 11 let me delete/rename my file?

In my experience, this is typically because the file name is too long. Although, it can happen if the file is being used by another program, there are insufficient permissions, the filename is problematic/invalid, and more.

Here's how to delete those pesky files that open normally but won't let you delete them.

  1. Shift + Right Click on the file(s) you want to delete. You can select multiple files.
  2. Select Copy as path in the menu that pops up.
  3. Press Windows Key () + R so that the run dialog box opens.
  4. Type cmd and click "OK" to open the command prompt.
  5. Type del\\?\, then right click or do ctrl + v to paste the file path(s) you copied earlier.
  6. Press Enter, and boom! Your file is now deleted.

If you're having trouble with the steps, watch the YouTube video embedded above.

And that's it! Hopefully this helped you delete an annoying file on your Windows 11 device.
