Metric vs Imperial
The metric system is used almost everywhere in the world. It is based on powers of ten, which makes calculations simple. Common metric units include millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, grams, kilograms, liters, and Celsius.
The imperial and US customary systems are still widely used in the United States and a few other places. Common imperial units include inches, feet, yards, miles, ounces, pounds, gallons, and Fahrenheit.

Tip: If you are cooking or tracking your weight, imperial units are usually what recipes and scales use in the US. If you are doing scientific work or living outside the US, metric is usually the standard.

Notes on Specific Categories
Data: We separate decimal (SI) units like KB, MB, and GB from binary (IEC) units like KiB, MiB, and GiB. They are not the same thing. A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes, while a mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes. Many storage devices are sold using decimal units while operating systems often display binary units, which is why a "1 TB" drive shows as around 931 GiB in some file managers.
Time: We treat a year as exactly 365 days for simplicity, and a month as 365 divided by 12 days. This is fine for everyday conversions but not for precise calendrical math.
Speed: Alongside metric and imperial units, we include knots in the Other group. Knots are used in aviation and maritime navigation.

Yes. Every conversion uses internationally recognized conversion factors. Temperature uses the standard Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin formulas.

Why is a "1 TB" drive showing as less than 1 TB?
Drive manufacturers use decimal units (1 TB = 1,000 GB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes), while most operating systems display binary units (1 TiB = 1,024 GiB). A drive sold as "1 TB" is actually 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is about 0.909 TiB. This tool lets you convert between both systems.
Can I use negative numbers for temperature?
Yes. Negative values work correctly for Celsius and Fahrenheit. Kelvin cannot go below zero in the real world, but the math still works if you enter a negative value.
How many decimal places should I trust?
The result shows enough precision to be useful for everyday work. If you need an exact figure for engineering or scientific work, round to the precision your context requires.
